Weekly Roundup – August 21, 2015

Hello Countryside Compadres!

August continues to blaze by, and in just a few weeks, lovers of all things pumpkin will be in their glory.  Starbucks devotees have been pleased to hear that this year, the beloved pumpkin spice latte will contain REAL pumpkin.  I’m not sure what it says about our society that we get excited when we learn there is a “real” ingredient in a beloved food item!
I, for one, am starting to think about my upcoming fantasy football draft.  Are you a Fantasy Guru and willing to share your tips?  Email me with any hidden sleepers out there, because sadly, I play every year but have this moment a lot during the season:
This also happens on a regular basis:
It has been a markedly quieter week here without our campers, but a lot of cool stuff is still in the works!  TOMORROW is our “Healthy Kids Triathlon”and it seems that the weather is going to cooperate!  If you were waiting to sign up to volunteer until you saw the weather forecast, you no longer have an excuse. Email or call Holly at x 177 and she will happily put you to work!
In other news, our own Torpedo, GRANT HOUSE (below right), has qualified for the Junior World Swimming Championships.  Grant will be competing for the USA in Singapore Aug. 25th – Aug. 30th.  We are proud of you Grant!
Earlier in August,  Countryside was represented by 30 of our Torpedoes at the 2015 YMCA Nationals. 131 teams competed and  CY finished 4th overall.  Fantastic!  The girls team finished 4th and the boys team placed 4th. It was a great team effort highlighted by Megan Sichterman winning the 100 Fly and the boys 400 Free Relay team of Matt Slabe, Kevin George, Jack German, and Jacob Peloquin. Way to make us proud!
We are also looking forward to having our sunshine, DEBRA PHILLIPS, back with us on a part-time basis starting next Tuesday!!
RUTH BEHRENS is up to some cool stuff in Health and Wellness!!  Check with her if you are interested in a Walking Club at Deerfield Towne Center that will meet Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 8:30 am.  You get a FREE T-shirt, and each time you walk you’ll be entered to win Deerfield Towne Center gift cards (the holidays will be here before you know it)!  Struggling with Chronic Disease?  Ruth has you covered there too.  A self-management class will run from September 11-October 16 from 11 am – 1:30 pm.  You can register in-person or online but please do so by September 4th or give Ruth a buzz at extension 140.
Our STAFF CHAMPIONS for the 4th quarter were recently selected by the previous winners.  THANK YOU to everyone who submitted a nomination!  If your nominee was not selected this go-round, they will remain in the pool for the next selection meeting later this year.  I would LOVE to double the number of nominees and make it really hard to choose!! We have shortened the selection form to make it a little easier for you.  Please fill one out online or print, complete and place in my mailbox!!  Attaching the form for your use!!
August, for me, is always kind of nostalgic as kids return to school. I know I’m not alone in this, as I’ve talked to many of you this week who are sending kids, grand kids, nieces, nephews etc. back to college or grade school. A friend sent me this video and I think Kenny Chesney summed up my feelings about it very nicely in this song.  DON’T BLINK.
The more employees I get to know, the more I am impressed how you all GET the mission of the Y and our core values.   You understand this:
Have a fantastic weekend everyone!!
